Teaching Kids About Money

Geld Uitleg is any item or medium that symbolizes perceived value and is accepted for payment of goods and services, as well as the repayment of loans. Economies rely on it to facilitate transactions and power financial growth. It has three fundamental functions: it serves as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and a store of value.

Kids need to understand that money doesn’t just come out of the ATM or from a cookie jar, but has to be earned by working for it. It’s important for them to know that most people work to pay for things like food, clothes, and even outings. Talking to them in an age-appropriate way about how much stuff costs and how most people earn their income can help them make sound financial decisions for life.

Money 101: Understanding the Basics of Currency

To be considered money, an asset must meet three criteria: it must be portable and replace the need to carry around tradable goods, it must be widely accepted, and it must have a stable value over time (as opposed to something like a basket of fruits that may lose its freshness over time). The most commonly used forms of money are coins and paper notes, but they can also take the form of electronic records.

One of the best ways to teach kids about Money is through hands-on activities that demonstrate the concept of an object with multiple characteristics. For example, give your child some coins and have them sort them by shape, color, size and number. Then, have them use them to buy a snack at the grocery store.
